The dairy industry in India has been on a steady path of progression since Indian independence. India is the world’s largest milk producer and accounts for 20% of global milk production, with most of it consumed domestically. Growing at about 10% annually, the Indian dairy industry is predominantly controlled by the unorganized sector. The per capita availability of milk in India stands at 289.4 grams per day and is expected to reach 336 grams per day in FY2017. The Centrally sponsored Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS) promotes setting up of modern dairy farms for production of clean milk, heifer calf rearing, bringing structural changes in the unorganized sector and generating self- employment.
