Agriculture
Micro-irrigation involves irrigation of crop at their root zone as per the crop requirement using appropriate technology like drip systems, sprinkler systems, etc. Apart from huge improvement in water use efficiency, this technology can also be used to facilitate optimal and effective application of fertilizers. To promote micro-irrigation in a big way, the Government of India launched the National Mission on Micro-Irrigation (NMMI) in which 40% of the cost of the MI system will be borne by the Central Government, 10% by the State Government and the remaining amount will be borne by the beneficiary either through his / her own resources or loan from financial institutions[1]. This Mission is expected to result in 2.85 million hectare being brought under micro-irrigation; savings in use of irrigation water, fertilizer and electricity; increase in crop production and productivity; and convergence with other ongoing schemes[2].
