Professional Students’ Summit 2K20 conducted successfully at CUSAT campus on February 15th

Professional Students’ Summit is an annual event of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Kerala organized by the Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) to provide a platform for students to interact with Professionals who created a niche for themselves in their fields after travelling difficult but successful paths. As the first summit of 2019, the second Professional Student Summit of 2020 (PSS 2K20) held at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) on 15th. February 2020 was also a great success. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the summit and Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Dr. K T Jaleel presided over the inaugural session. Dr. Usha Titus, IAS, Principal Secretary, Higher Education, welcomed the gathering. The plenary session by Prof. Gagandeep Kang FRS, the Executive Director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad was followed by a Special Address by Mr. Faizal E K, Founder and Chairman, KEF Holdings, Bengaluru, in the forenoon.

In his address Hon’ble Chief Minister shared the State’s hope on the youth and observed that they were in the forefront in coordinating the relief and rescue activities during the recent devastating floods that affected the state. He pointed out that the state should develop in such a way that in the future Keralites need not travel across the world in search of job opportunities, but find exciting careers in state itself. Dr. K T Jaleel, Hon'ble Minister for Higher Education in his presidential address said that the students of the summit are ambassadors of their institutions and that they should be sharing knowledge gained from the summit with their institutional peers. Minister added that tomorrow's challenges can be solved if we produce skilled people rather than just degree holders.

Reputed academicians and professionals from various disciplines and from different parts of the country interacted with students and exposed them to the possibilities for contributing to the society in general and State in particular. The event involved plenary and breakaway sessions providing ample opportunities for knowledge exchange.

PSS 2K20 involved 1720 students from about 300 colleges and 12 different professional streams. The summit had 25 speakers, all of them being illustrious personalities with great professional achievements and experience who shared their ideas with the students. The students were enlightened about the developments and initiatives in the fields of Law, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Fisheries and Management. After concurrent subject based sessions, student representatives from each stream presented before the Hon’ble Chief Minister, the ideas and suggestions they gathered from the sessions. The Chief Minister in his reply speech exhorted the students to actively involve in Government initiatives to create a better Kerala. The Chief Minister said that the Government plans to set up District Industry Centres (DIC) all districts that will act as facilitation centers to encourage new entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas and no financial backing to venture into entrepreneurship. Students can make use of the expert service in these centres on the days allocated for the service.

Student participants were gifted with helmets along with participation certificates. Distribution of helmets as gift was meant as a safety awareness drive from the part of the organisers of the event.
