A workshop on ‘Utilizing the expertise of technical institutions for empowering Local Self Government ‘ was convened on 1st June 2019 at College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram under the aegis of Additional Skill Acquisition Programme , in association with Local Self Government Department. The workshop was organized based on the convergence of LSGD and Higher education departments for facilitating the internship to engineering students at the LSG institutes and projects.
The event was inaugurated by Shri. A C Moideen, Hon’ble Minister for Local Self Government Department. Dr K. T. Jaleel, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education Department presided the function. The Project proposal was presented by Dr Usha Titus I.A.S., Principal Secretary, Higher Education and Mr T K Jose I.A.S., Additional Chief Secretary, Local Self Government Department.
In his inaugural address, Shri. A. C Moideen, urged that the internship program should not be limited to skill development initiatives of students but should ensure the involvement of faculties as well. Min. A.C.Moideen also requested the LSGD institutions to extend their full-fledged support and assistance to the project and to ensure that the resources available at their own reach is utilized in a way that will be mutually beneficial.
Dr. K T Jaleel, Minister for Higher Education urged the technical institutions to come up with projects and solutions to address the community based needs of the area and to encourage startups rather than relying on external resources for solutions, thus enabling them to play a pivotal role in rebuilding the state.
The role of Kudumbasree in providing internship was also presented by Dr. Harikishore, Mission Director,Kudumbasree.
Discussions surfaced on various domains where technical institutions can collaborate with LSGD for rebuilding the state and to include more beneficiaries at the receiving end. The potential of the LSGI’s to act as internship providers for the students of engineering colleges was also discussed wherein the LSGI’s open up their engineering projects for internship experiences of engineering students, and subsequently for apprenticeship and contractual employment.
